Moves completed!

On Friday afternoon the movers left the Emmitsburg campus after having delivered the collection from Evansville, the last of the four provincial collections to move in. Now Emmitsburg, St. Louis, Albany and Evansville are all safely stored in our new repository, making the Archives of the Province of St. Louise a reality! We continue to be grateful to our maintenance and housekeeping staffs, the contractors, and movers — everyone who has eased us through this last month with able hands, kind words and much-needed prayers. Next week, we put the finishing touches on the first-floor exhibit halls. And by the end of the week, the very first tours will begin!

Now that the Province of St. Louise Archives is established, we look ahead to the blessing of the Emmitsburg Campus on December 14 and our opening to the public in January. Please see the “About” page on this site for our paper mail and email addresses. Right now, email and paper mail are the best ways to contact us, as we will be busy over the coming days readying spaces and collections for our public opening. In January we will be able to accept phone inquiries.

In addition please watch our website for information on access and reading room policies, and information for visitors making a research trip to Emmitsburg. That information will be posted soon.   Thank you for your patience with us while we were closed over the summer and fall. We look forward to serving researchers in our new space!

Our new blog!

The Daughters of Charity Province of St. Louise Archives now has a blog to go along with our Facebook page and website!

Website: http://www.daughtersofcharity.org/our-legacy/
Facebook: www.facebook.com/dcarchives
Blog: https://dcarchives.wordpress.com

This is an exciting time for the Provincial Archives, as we are in the “home stretch” of planning for the move to our new facility in Emmitsburg, MD and the consolidation of archival collections from  four former Daughter of Charity Provinces.  In order to prepare for the move to Emmitsburg, archival collections at all 4 Daughter of Charity campuses (Albany, NY, Emmitsburg, MD, Evansville, IN, and St. Louis, MO) have closed to researchers effective August 15.  The move itself will take place over the next few months. We will continue to post short historical stories on Facebook, but reference services to the general public have been  suspended until the collection moves are complete. Once the collections are on the shelves in Emmitsburg we will resume our normal public service.

The latest news concerning progress on the new archives will be posted both here and on Facebook.

The new archives will have a climate controlled repository for housing the collections, a reading room for reseachers, and exhibit spaces. The archives will  open to the public in early 2013. Once the Archives opens, this blog will have information on services and public programs in the Archives. We’ll also post answers to commonly asked reference questions, to facilitate use of our collections by researchers.

Thank you for your interest the Province of St. Louise Archives!
