Last week, Dee Gallo and Carole Prietto had the chance to visit a new museum in Gettysburg, the Seminary Ridge Museum, for a “preview” tour, courtesy of the museum’s executive director. The Seminary Ridge Museum will open to the public on July 1, 2013, 150 years to the day after the start of the Battle of Gettysburg. The museum is located in Schmucker Hall on the campus of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg. It features four floors and 20,000 square feet of interactive exhibit galleries and educational programming which will interpret three major areas of emphasis: the pivotal first day of the Battle of Gettysburg on Seminary Ridge, the care of the wounded and human suffering within Schmucker Hall during its use as a Civil War field hospital, and the moral, civic, and spiritual debates of the Civil War era.

The museum’s exhibits are beautiful and powerful, well worth the trip for anyone interested in the Civil War. The Seminary Ridge Museum is a fine complement to the Provincial Archives’ upcoming exhibit, “Our Buildings and Very Earth Trembled”, which will open on June 29 and run through July 6.
