We pray for the repose of the souls of two Daughters of Charity who died this morning at the Villa St. Michael, Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Sister Marian Hagner. Died September 8, 2014, 91 years of age and 70 years of vocation
Sister Anne Joseph Edelen. Died September 8, 2014, 94 years of age and 75 years of vocation.
May they rest in peace.
8 September , Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
During the intercessions of Evening Prayer, I have a Daughters of Charity section. Tonight, on this gentlest of feasts, I included Sister Anne Joseph and Sister Marian. While I knew Sister Anne Joseph by name, I’m not sure that I ever met her. (Though Sister Betty Ann McNeil is convinced that I knew Mother Seton!)
But I did certainly know Sister Marian. I first met her at Villanova University during summer school in June 1963 when she was studying for a Master’s degree. That continued in the summers of 1964, 1965. I would meet her again in the mid-1980s while visiting my aunt and godmother, Sister Frances Cumberland, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House where Sister Marian was serving as administrator. She said that she still recognized elements of the youthful face that she had known nearly a quarter century before. She was, of course, too kind, a characteristic of the Daughters.
In this difficult year, two more of that company of strong and valiant women have gone before us marked with the sign of Faith. Let them rest from their labors, for their works follow them.
